E65 745i gearbox problem PLEASE HELP

Post by carlc957 » 29 Jan 2016, 18:36

Good evening

I am new to the forum

I have a problem with my 745i 2003 E65.....

When you drive the car it drives fine changes gear fine drives smooth....Untill you go to floor it!When you kick the pedal down it pulls fine but then gets to about 5k revs and hits a limiter!!!if you ease off the throttle slightly it will change gear and carry on pulling. It does this in every gear when its hot or cold

I took the car to a good indy and there are no fault codes on the gearbox what so ever the oil level in the box was fine and he re set all the settings but still have the problem.

Has anyone had any similar problem?Any help would be great

Thank you

Not sure what you mean by 'hits a limiter'? Do you mean at 5k revs it doesn't change up and won't rev any higher?

What's the mileage on the car and has the gearbox fluid/filter been changed?

well it gets to about 4.5-5k and its almost as if the engine hits a rev limiter and will not change up. You can normally kick your foot to the floor keep it on the floor and will just change up gears. Its like it hits a rev limiter at 5k and will just not change up but if you lift slightly off the throttle it will change up and keep pulling.
I have no idea what is going on and when there were no fault codes I was just lost and the indy didn't have a clue what it was.

car has done 143k and I can't say if its been changed or not but level has been checked and all ok

I'd go for the cheapest option first - get the fluid and filter changed - the BMW 'sealed for life' gearbox is a myth and you'll be staggered at 140k what the fluid looks like (if it hasn't been changed). It's about £400 at an indie (there's a lot of fluid!). If that's not it, then the control unit is probably next, but that usually spits out a code.............

Thanks for your help

I did think the oil and filter but I cant see how the car drives so perfect until you hit the kick down i would of thought if it was the fluid it would drive rough all the time

In all probability a dodgy solenoid valve (could be electrical or mechanical fault with it), I would change the oil and filter first but make sure you use nothing but the recommended oil by the gearbox manufacturer and a genuine filter, if you can't do the job yourself buy the oil and filter and get your indy to do the job labour only.

I had the oil and filter changed and it hasn't fixed the problem :((

I can't see it being the actual gearbox as it drives fine apart from this and never throws up fault or error messages and still no fault codes stored anywhere on the car

I'm left puzzled as I have no idea what to do now
