Advice on Diesel engine

Post by Markpro » 27 Sep 2017, 20:02

Have an E91 2.0 diesel and previously had a 1 series 2.0 diesel, i only do around 4 miles to work and then between 10 and 20 miles throughout the day, i have heard short journeys like this are not good for a diesel engine and can effect the EGR (just had a new dual mass flywheel fitted so not worried about that), what i was wondering is what do people on recommend to help keep their engine running clean, fill up with premium diesel every 3 or 4 fills or run redex or similar through the tank every few fills or giving the motor a good blast every month or so by having a long distance drive at speed...just wondered what others recommend.

When i had my old 325tds, used to run it on v power diesel and clean the EGR out by taking it off the car and use brake clean to get rid of any carbon, did the same mileage as yourself 5 miles to work 5 miles back and take the car out at weekends

Most decent branded fuels have enough detergents to not need any additive. But a good run every few weeks seems to be the best preventative measure.

A good 'thrash' every so often works too.
Warm it up, when it's ready do a few runs taking it thru gears to max RPM, you'll see the sh*t coming out of exhaust in rear view mirror.
When it's stopped pumping out black smoke, it's clean :d
