My 325TDI starts instantly when cold, but when hot it nearly runs the battery down to get it to start. Can anybody help with an idea.

This could be a number of reasons, there is a white relay in the fuse box that controls a lot of stuff for starting and fuel pump, had this on my old 325tds

Plus when the car is hot the fuel pump does not start up all the time but try the relay fingers crossed that will work

Assuming this is a TDS - this is a common problem. If you've eliminated air leaks etc, it seems to regularly be related to either worn injectors (150k miles upwards) or a fuel pump(s) issue.

I had that problem on my old 320d - turned out to be the camshaft sensor.

My indie mechanic said it was a common problem on high milers and he always did a substitution test of the sensor before looking for a more expensive reason.

Good luck.
Always had a BMW since I collected my first one in Munich - a 528i in June 1982.

+1 on the cam sensor.
Have you had a code scan done would be your first option.

+2 on the cam/crank sensor... had this issue recently on mine.. When it eventually starts when hot, does it run fine? I found that mine started and ran perfectly when cold, but when warm/hot, it was a pain to start and ran very lumpy.... :)
