Thanks for posting the solution! I guess we're none the wiser about the connection between symptom and cure, but you've got it sorted which is most important!

A high pressure fuel hose has been replaced and much to my amazement this was the item which was making all the noise. The car now runs quietly throughout the rev range. Result!

The work was paid for by a non-BMW dealership who sold me the car a few weeks ago.

Glad I didn't take a punt and get the vibration damper or serpentine tensioner done as this would not have cured things. I might do them soon anyway as she has 93K on the clocks.
An interesting find
I would never of thought that would of been the problem
My guess is they've come across this fault before so they can pin point it straight away

I am sure they knew what it was without much investigating.

Fuel hoses are at the end of the list of parts NOT covered by BMW extended warranty. Strange that!

I'm looking forward to getting some driving done now.

Hi, I also have a 2000rpm issue but I'd say mine is a squeal but it could be vibration. I could finde the clip of you sound so I can't compare. My clip is below. Is this the same? If not does anyone have any ideas?
We get this noise/squeal at 2k rpm once engine is warm. Above and below these revs it's fine. Really annoyingly gives one last squeal on shut down. It's been like this for 3 years. It's not got better or worse. 2 garages have been unable to identify it. We have changed the belt, tensioner, water pump and A/C condenser. No difference. Car is serviced regularly now with 140k miles on clock. other than this it runs as good as new.

You can hear the noise in this video https://youtu.be/svJrRKuLx9Y

Hard to say but definitely there as the engine dies off. With all those parets changed there's not much left other than the pully....might be worth dousing the belt with belt slip (£5) and see if it makes any difference?
