Agree with all of the above with using genuine BMW parts, don't forget your forum discounts with our BMW dealer too, saved me a fortune with all the bits I've bought for the Z - Click me for the BMW parts quote request thread

It didn't end well for me! Turned out to be burnt out valves and needed a top end rebuild. I would suggest as a first part to check would be the Mass Airflow Meter. That can throw up all sorts of codes. Camshaft sensors were fine on mine. Now the guys that did the rebuild for me assured me the MAF was fine, but the EM light kept coming back up after the rebuild. Another BMW indie changed it for me and the light has never come back on. He also found that the VANOS timing was out. Which wasn't good considering how much the rebuild had cost me!

Having just looked in the hand book I may have got me facts wrong I said it was the Engine Management Light was on in fact its the Engine light (yellow) the hand book says "Deterioration of exhaust emission control valves" so would I be right in thinking a hole in a hose would muck up the mixture getting light to come on....

An air leak would throw the mixture right out and bring up the engine management light. Most likely culprit for an air leak is the pipe running from the filter to the inlet manifold. Check it for splits on the elbow of the pipe
