Smoking Volvo!!

Post by M60NJP » 29 Feb 2016, 09:53

I pulled up at a roundabout (we've a few here!!) and there's a puff of smoke drifting forward from the rear of the Volvo! I blame the usual diesel drivers clattering around me. But, no - I get home and the rear caliper is smoking. I fitted new pads a few weeks ago.

So, I whip the wheel off (after I let it cool down!!) take off the caliper and............

There's two perfectly good pads, properly seated, caliper piston looking good and moving freely. Absolutely nothing visibly wrong. I re-greased the pad seats, pushed the caliper back in (it's one of those PITA wind-back ones...grrr...) and reassemble. Handbrake self-adjusts, pump the pedal and the wheel turns freely!!

I have absolutely not idea what caused it!!

So the wheel was pretty hot when you got home? Was there more brake dust on that particular wheel in comparison to the others?...

We had a sticky caliper on the 'vert which was intermittent. I went through the same process (disassemble, lubricate where needed (ooooh errr), reassemble) all appeared ok until the next time it happened.... At which point, I called it a day and replaced both the front calipers, figuring if one had gone, the other probably wouldn't be far behind...

Hope you get it sorted bud....

Just had a chat with a 'volvo' chap, says it sounds like a temporary seize, bit of crap in it that later fell out.

Thanks both. The other possibility is the handbrake mechanism was sticking - it's been a bit temperamental for some time, but released OK when I tried it.

That would also make sense given the decent condition of the pads.. does it operate a set of 'shoes' inside the rear discs like the 36's do?

You were going too fast!! That was the Volvo automatic brake system being deployed for going over 40mph :)

All well last night - wheel itself was cold and no smoke. Difficult to judge today due to the rain!!

MoT later in the year might be interesting.............
