Cooper R53 Front End Clunk

Post by robwright » 05 Feb 2017, 17:21

Hi there from newbie. Have a problem with my stepson's 06 plate cooper. There is a metallic knock when travelling at low speed. Car has just had some work done as such:

New suspension strut top mount.
New track rod end.
New bottom control arm ball joint.
All on passenger side.

Things I have checked:

Pinch bolt on hub carrier for suspension strut is torqued correctly.
Strut to top mount nut is torqued correctly.
Top mount fixing bolts torqued correctly.
All parts show signs of age but look sound.

My thoughts of were to go are:

Disconnect the ARB drop links and try a gentle test run to see if knock disappears.
If the knock is still apparent then fit another top mount.

Hoping it is not the ARB bushes or bracket as from what I can see you need to drop the subframe to renew these. Anyone had a similar issue? What was the solution? Any suggestions? All gratefully received. Thanks in advance Rob.

Is the knock 'in time' with the wheel rotation, only over bumps?............

Not sure what you mean by in time with wheel rotation? Only really at slow speed over bumps yes. Normal driving it drives fine unless there is a considerable divet in the road.

As in a clunk every revolution of the wheel - seemingly not.

My guess from afar would be ARB bush on the other side which was previously masked by the one you've had replaced?

Haven't replaced any of the ARB components just passenger top mount and passenger track rod end. Don't think it is the CV joint or a bearing TBH. They all seem pretty solid.

If everything replaced is correctly tightened it must have 'aggravated' something else - I'm puzzled that the knock is 'metallic' though - which suggests metal on metal?
